Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Dayhaven Designs?
Thanks for asking! Our story…
Being creative and crafty, our owner, Theodorus, had always dreamed of creating beautiful things to share with those he cared about. After a year-and-a-half of an exhausting, frustrating, and demoralizing job hunt in his now-former career field he finally said * it. He and his husband decided to take a chance. What better time than the present for reinvention and for making a lifelong dream come true?
As is typical of Theodorus, he jumped into an adventure he knew absolutely nothing about. He had never run his own business and although he had always liked embroidered designs, he had never encountered an actual embroidery machine. Those in his inner circle showed support and wished him well, all the while holding their breaths in the hopes that he hadn’t gone a little nutty. And yet he pushed forward.
There are facets of our founder, his family, and his friends in everything we do at DHD. Passion, angst, determination, hope, and the will to succeed… it’s all there in many of our designs, and it’s all there for you. We sincerely hope our artistry resonates with you and that you might want to own some of our pieces for yourself and those you care about.
Your support means everything to us. We truly respect and appreciate you.
Why is embroidery so pricey?
It’s all about stitches, fabric choice, and longevity. Unlike embroidery, 2-dimensional printing on garments applies an entire design onto a surface in a relatively short time. This allows rapid production of a large quantity at a very affordable retail price point.
Embroidery is a 3-dimensional application of thread on top of fabric. Thread is applied one stitch at a time. Embroidered designs can easily require a few hundred to over 100 thousand stitches. Most embroidery machines can apply 600 to 1,200 stitches per minute. Even at higher stitching speeds, some larger designs can take over an hour to stitch out on a single embroidery machine. Each piece requires materials, techniques, manual labor, and timing unique to this medium which must be factored into the retail price.
So why not go for a faster, more affordable 2-D print?
Traditional 2-D printed designs will always be a clothing industry standard. But they can fade, wash away, or even disintegrate over time. Though some applications can retain a vibrant design virtually forever, like sublimation on polyester for example, they can also negatively impact desirable fabric characteristics like breathability, softness, and texture.
Embroidery allows a design to be reliably placed atop the desirable characteristics of almost any fabric type like 100% cotton or even leather. At DHD, we use premium Madeira thread. This brand of synthetic fiber is one of the most durable on the market. Color isn’t just dyed onto the thread; it’s part of it. Embroidery also uses solid, supportive backing to stabilize stitches into place. The medium is so robust that, over the course of normal wear and tear some embroidery can quite possibly outlast the garment it’s stitched onto.
Embroidery indulges both sight and touch. While 2-D printed designs are a solid choice, 3-D embroidered designs will always be a deluxe choice.
Can I buy one of your embroidery designs, but in a different size and/or color?
Sounds like an interesting idea. Let’s talk possibilities! info@DayhavenDesigns.com
Do you offer custom embroidery, like company logos on a polo shirt, or little league jerseys with team name and player number?
Not yet, but we’re hoping to change that to an “absolutely!” sometime in 2026.
Can I buy your items in bulk?
Sounds like an interesting idea. Let’s talk possibilities! info@DayhavenDesigns.com
Do you offer “Live Laugh Love”-type, text-based word art in your embroidery?
We will soon. Work is in-progress on this one!
Do you create all of the designs that you offer?
Nope. While we have created several of the designs in our lineup, many other designs were created by talented embroidery and graphic artists whose work we admire. This has allowed us to expand our offerings to various tastes and preferences of our customers. We're always on the lookout for new art that you, and we, are gonna love.
When will DHD Accessories be available? What accessories will you offer?
This might be a stretch, but hopefully in time for the 2025 holiday season. If not, then most definitely sometime in 2026. Items we’re considering: Caps, backpacks, market bags, and aprons. The list is still evolving.
When will Smudge’s Corner be available? What items will Smudge offer?
Early 2026. At DHD, we can’t decide who’s more excited about this… our owner or his son and canine-in-charge, Smudge.
Between the two of them, they’re considering embroidered dog collars, dog hoodies, sweaties, and blankets.
Will you be adding new embroidery designs and garments to your lineup in the future?
Absolutely! Theodorus is probably down in the shop thinking about our next design combos right this moment.
Can I wash and dry embroidery?
Yup. We recommend washing and drying on lower temperatures to increase the lifespan of both garment and stitches.
Is your embroidery colorfast?
Yup. At DHD, we use premium Madeira polyester thread in our designs. Color isn’t just dyed onto this thread; it’s part of it. It resists fading in both the washing machine and sunlight.
Who can I contact with questions or concerns about my order?
Why can it take up to 2 weeks to receive my order?
As mentioned in our Shipping Policy, DHD currently practices Just-In-Time (JIT) order fulfillment. This means we order your garment from its manufacturer once we receive your online order. JIT requires us to wait for your garment to arrive at our shop, after which we then stitch your awesome embroidery design onto it. Once stitching and processing are completed, we’ll ship your garment ASAP!
JIT allows our small shop to maintain competitive pricing, maintain appropriate on-hand inventory counts, and avoid costly supply shortages and excesses.
What is your return and refund policy?
Please see our Returns and Refunds Policy
My item was damaged while in transit to me. What do I do now?
Please see our Shipping Policy.
Do you ever sell at farmer’s markets, craft fairs, comicons, and other in-person events?
Yes, we do, and we’d love to meet you in person!
Do you sell products to customers outside the United States?
Not yet, unfortunately. As mentioned in our Shipping Policy, due to recent political uncertainties in the United States, DHD currently only ships to addresses within the U.S., U.S. Territories, and APO/FPO/DPO addresses. We look forward to the day when we can lift this restriction!
Are you guys hiring?
First off: We believe everyone should be able to find employment in a space that allows them to meet their financial needs while also finding professional fulfillment!
That being said, we’re not currently hiring. If our small business is ever blessed enough to outgrow “small”, then you’d best believe we’ll provide a work environment that’s safe, welcoming, and supportive for everyone that may join our team.
